A Post from the Sky!

Hi readers! I am currently on a flight headed for California to visit my Dad.  I am writing this post at an altitude of 35,000 feet. How is that possible? It is because Virgin America is the BEST airline EVER.  I was a Virgin virgin but I don’t think I could possibly fly another airline ever again.

Not only does Virgin have great entertainment at every seat (Satellite TV, video-games, on-demand entertainment like seasons of TV shows and movies) AND Wi-Fi available. The only problem with the wifi was the price: $12.95 for the flight.  When I booked the flight, I thought it was free, but since I will be on the plane for over 5 hours, it was WELL worth the $13.  How else would I publish a blog post from the sky? They also have USB and AC plugs at every seat to charge your electronics while you play. Because what good would the Wi-Fi be if my computer’s battery ran out? Although, according to Apple, my MacBook Pro has a battery that can last up to 9 hours.  Considering I’ve been on it for 20 minutes and am already down to less than 3 hours, I don’t really buy that claim.

So anyway, just wanted to post this because I CAN…and normally when I’m flying, I just wish I can go online.  I will try to keep up with my daily blog posts from California…but I make no promises:)

More Waiting Room Poetry

What to do when you forget your book?
Around the room I look and look.
Fashion horrors all around
Band-aids on fingers are abound.

News 12 on the big screen
Local commercials loud they scream.
Sitting next to guy playing with his beard
He has these odd glasses on, very weird.

My appointment was ten minutes ago
And still I sit and wait
It drives me crazy when they make me late.

That’s all for now
Hoping they will call my name soon
Any day now I will be out of here
When? Well, that just isn’t clear.

My Good Deed that Went Bad

A few hours ago, my landlord, Jenn, texted me: “OMG dead kitten in front of house.” Being a cat lover, I immediately threw on my shoes and ran outside to see what happened.  A truck had stopped (not the one that hit it) and the lights were hitting it. It was sitting straight up and moving a little.  I ran over (a few houses down) and Jenn said when they drove by, it was laying flat like it had been run over, but when she went to move it off the road it was alive.  The person who hit it didn’t even stop.

The kitten was about 2 months old, all white with orange spots and it was bleeding from the mouth and struggling to breathe.  The only animal hospital that is open 24 hours is about 20 minutes away, so we got a box and got him in there with some towels and made the drive over.  I drove and Jenn kept checking on him (we decided it was a boy, no reason really) in the box to make sure he wasn’t dead.  We named him Max.  Max the white and orange kitten.

When we got to the animal hospital, they took him to the back to take a look and had Jenn fill out “Good Samaritan” forms, I guess this happens often.  They said their policy is you either take responsibility for the cat (and all medical bills) or they euthanize the animal.  Jenn broke into tears.  She couldn’t take the kitten, she has a 1 year old baby and a 12 year old cat.  That’s not the best mix.  And I can’t take the kitten.  I have enough to deal with right now, plus Gracie, that’s enough.  We both felt better when the Dr. came out and said Max had severe head trauma and wouldn’t make it anyway, even if we did take him.  So Jenn signed the papers to authorize them to put him to sleep. Poor little kitty Max.

At least we tried.  I know we weren’t successful at saving him, but we tried to save him and that’s the most important thing.  Have you ever done a good deed like that?

HOW TO: Use Twitter Lists in 5 Different Ways

When the Twitter lists feature was introduced, I was super-excited.  Before that day, I would use the search feature and save a column on Hootsuite. (Actually, I was using Tweetdeck at the time, but that’s a useless bit of info.) So anyway, Twitter lists were introduced last year, and are limited to 500 twitter users per list.  Each Twitter user is limited to making 20 lists but can follow an unlimited number of other’s lists.  I have found that there are five very different ways to use lists:

  1. Filter - Lists come in handy to me to filter the people I follow.  I am currently following over 18,000 people.  This makes it a little difficult to read every tweet! Lists give me a way to filter in any way I want: by location, by interests, etc.
  2. Get a user to follow you back –  I don’t have any of these lists, but I am included on them often.  And each time, I follow that user back.  You are more likely to catch the attention of a high-profile user by putting them on a list then just following them.
  3. Give props to a user – Also known as kissing ass and another way to get a user to follow you back.  For example: “Awesome tweeps”, “Best Twitter users”, “Most beautiful”…you get the idea.
  4. Thank a user for listing you – Some people don’t understand the use of these lists, and it’s not that I actually check it often, but I’ve always had good manners.  This is a quick and easy way to thank users for including you on their lists.
  5. Conversationlist – When I first saw my name popping up on these lists, I thought it said “conversationAList”, which would make sense for me, since we all know I like to talk.  Then I noticed that they were popping up ALL over the place, and they all had the same description: “A dynamic list rebuilt daily of the people you are talking to and about.”  So, I decided to Google it.  And I found Conversationlist.com, a site that will rebuild your list every day for you based on your Twitter conversations! GENIUS.

Below is a screenshot of my lists, so you can see how I use them:

I also have one protected list of my closest friends on Twitter:

***IMPORTANT TIP: Add yourself to every list you have!!!  To some, this may seem silly, but it’s a way to meet new people on Twitter.  If someone who isn’t following you follows your list through someone else, they will never get to see your tweets.  If you add yourself, you will be included in the stream and be seen by more users.  There are exceptions to this rule: Pet lists, brands and celebrities, because lets face it, you don’t want to be the only human among a bunch of dogs and cats, and you certainly aren’t a brand or celebrity, are you?

How do you use Twitter lists? I love comments, so please share!
